Here are some answers to some commonly asked questions.
What is Earned Media?
In content marketing, there’s the trinity: Owned, Paid, and Earned. Owned means the message you create on-site, paid refers to advertising, and earned refers to any other online content that links to and talks about your brand.
I think this is a great term to encompass all that I’m trying to do, which is ultimately increase your visibility around the internet (which leads to backlinks, stronger SEO optimization and organic traffic growth!). You can learn more about this school of thought here.
How Do You Measure Success?
My primary measure of success are number of backlinks and media placements. Secondarily, with long-term clients, I look at organic traffic growth over time.
How many links/Placements Can you earn in Quarter?
While I do measure success by placements and backlinks, the answer to ‘how many I can build’ is impossible to predict. The results will depend on a number of factors such as brand awareness, quality of content, industry size/competition, and other components that may not be in our control. However, when working with me, you can be assured that my sincere answer is: “As many high-quality links as I can earn in the quarter.”
How does what you do differ from PR/media relations?
In a lot of ways, what I do does not differ — at least in the sense of earning media. I have earned clients spots on big media such as Vice and Lifehacker. If you work with me, you can expect the same level of opportunity for your brand. Or, if you already have a rockstar PR/media relations department, we can do some SEO/link building training so they’re up to date on best practices that will maximize your organic traffic growth potential over time.
